Juan Aguilera

Juan calls upon a canon of symbols and media to create artwork that is reminiscent of retablos - devotional paintings in Mexican folk art. For Juan, the significance of his imagery is similarly reverential, yet he chooses to replace traditional Catholic iconography with women’s underwear and nude female bodies. The feminine, to Juan, is of the utmost divinity and represents qualities that he greatly admires - ornamentation and freedom.

Flowers, birds, and butterflies often accompany the women and undergarments in Juan’s artwork. He explains their meanings poetically, believing in the power of their symbiosis:

“Birds, butterflies, and dragonflies fertilize and pollinate flowers, flowers make honey.

Birds and butterflies heal flowers. They make flowers colorful like bright green, sky blue.

Birds and butterflies eat honey.

Flowers are turquoise, orange, and dark yellow.

Birds make flowers dark grey with turquoise.

Flowers have perfume, honey perfume.

Flowers have planet names because they have cosmic colors like purple, pink and orange.

Jupiter and Venus have purple and blue water that comes from the flowers.”

Juan’s dream is to have a factory that produces women’s underwear. He imagines a bustling workshop where exquisite garments of his own design are made on special machines with bright silks and colorful thread. He wrote about his admiration for the craft and his vision of “regional chones” in this feature from the Creative Growth magazine.

El de Canreipe es hecho de máquinas que bordan puntos gruesos los chones también los hacen en la ciudad Morelia.
